The smoke settles
And the day breaks
With half-empty beds
And stained souls
Fragments of slurred words cloud the daylight
Another night meant to be forgotten
The lost continue to lead themselves astray
To find light where only darkness looms
They revel in their shallow earthly pleasures
And bathe in their grime
In the only world they long to live in
I seek that familiar gaze
That delicate smile
That fragile frame
The light in those eyes
Caught up in a world I don’t belong
I remember the simpler days
And the clarity of my commitment
Caught between contrasting pasts and a new day
I come to realize the value of a promise
Again, I come back to you
